Ayurvedic Skin Care Oils
Body odor is the smell that results when bacteria is present on the body. Perspiration (or sweat,) is generally odorless, though it has often been blamed for body odor. Sweat seems to cause body odor because bacteria multiplies significantly when it mixes with perspiration. Sweat is generally odorless. Most of the times, it is the bacterial disintegration of sweat of both the types that produces odor. It is the Apocrine sweat that causes more of body odor. To stop body odor, the need is to remove sweat as it accumulates on the skin and to reduce bacteria that thrives on the sweat and produces odor. Use of a good anti bacterial soap can reduce bacteria to a substantial extent. Those who are more troubled by this problem of body odor also use antiperspirants. As antiperspirants reduce the amount of sweat considerably, the problem of body odor is taken care of.
Most people who have body odor can control this problem by adopting simple, regular, self-care techniques. These include bathing regularly once or twice a day; washing the armpits thoroughly using an antibacterial soap; using a deodorant or antiperspirant; shaving the armpits regularly; wearing natural made fibers; and limiting the consumption of red meat and spicy foods. Ayurvedic medicines can be given to those people who do not benefit from the above self-care techniques and continue to have a problem of body odor. Medicated Ayurvedic soaps containing Haridra (Curcuma longa), Chandan (Santalum album) and Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis) can be used to wash the body every day. These medicines act against the bacteria in the skin, bring about a cooling effect, and emanate a pleasant odor. In addition, the body can be massaged with fine powders of the above mentioned herbal medicines and also other medicines like Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia) and Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus).
Here are 6 natural alternatives to treat your body odor at its very source.
1) Anti-Bacterial Body Wash: When you are in the shower use an anti-bacterial body wash that is either coal tar or tea-tree oil based. This will continue to kill the odor causing bacteria for several hours after your shower.
2) Vinegar: Dabbing vinegar into your armpits with a cotton ball will also help to kill the odor causing bacteria. However, be careful not to apply it to broken skin or directly after shaving as it will sting very badly.
3) Witch Hazel: This is a herbal extract in non-alocholic solution. It is a natural astringent known for shrinking skin pores, drying and deodorizing the skin. Splash this clean-smelling, cooling liquid onto your skin liberally with a cotton wool pad. Do not apply to broken skin.
4) Arrowroot: Use arrowroot powder as a talc. This fine, light powder does an excellent job of absorbing moisture which leads to bacteria growth. It is natural and non-toxic and will leave you feeling cool and dry.
5) Essential Oils: Apply a few drops of sweet smelling, anti-bacterial essential oils to your problem areas. Some good ones are tea-tree, lavender, pine and peppermint. Just make sure you do a patch test first as some people have reactions to certain oils.
6) Lemon Juice: What makes lemon juice great is that it is highly acidic and odor causing bacteria (in fact any bacteria) have a hard time surviving in an acidic environment. Just splash on some lemon juice under the arms or any other problems areas and then pat dry. Just like vinegar and witch hazel, you should not apply lemon juice to broken skin, for obvious ‘painful’ reasons.
