Coconut oil and butter have a long history of use in the tropics as nourishing and healing agents for the skin. Consisting largely of medium chain fatty acids, coconut oil is a saturated fat and therefore not easily oxidised. Effectively this means it is very stable and doesnÂ’t go rancid easily. Rancidity in oils is the result of free radical production and occurs readily in polyunsaturated vegetable oils. Many skin care products utilise polyunsaturated vegetable oils as base ingredients which easily oxidise and go rancid once opened. This can contribute to localised free radical damage in the skin. Coconut also contains antioxidants which add to the protective effect against oxidation.
The benefits of topical use of coconut oil are long lasting as it aids healing and repairing as well as assisting the skin to hold onto water content within the cells. In this way it helps prevent skin dehydration.
As a stable ingredient coconut oil not only has nourishing effects on the skin but also the hair. One Indian study compared mineral oil, sunflower oil and coconut oil as they were commonly used hair treatments. The findings of the study showed that coconut oil reduced protein loss in both treated and untreated hair whereas this effect was not found with mineral or sunflower oils. The net effect is healthier hair. Coconut oil also nourishes and softens the scalp, helping to prevent dryness and flaking.
