Most of the films we watch tend to be produced by big companies and famous film makers that manage to get very impressive budgets of many millions of dollars. But only few people know about the other movies like independent films.

Independent films do not usually come from any of the major films studios like Paramount, Warner Bros or any others. Interestingly, independent films seem to be produced in more quantities outside the United States, probably because this market is dominated by the big companies.
Most people would think that if those movies are not produced by the major studios it is because they are not of good quality, which is not true. A lot of independent films are of good quality. Actually, it is not because a movie is made by a major film studio that it is a good film. So it is not because a film had a low budget that it will not succeed and be a great story to watch.

On top of all that, it is not unusual to see some of the famous actors you would see on some of the big productions actually doing independent movies from time to time. It does not mean that because actors in independent films are not all well known they are not good actors. On the contrary, some of them are very good actors and play well in those independent films.

Did you know for example that some of the films you all have seen or at least heard of actually are independent films? The Blair Witch Project, Fahrenheit 9/11 or even the passion of the Christ are independent films that everybody know.

Thanks to the development of digital media and cameras, it has become even easier to make independent films at a very low budget, and filmmakers are no longer dependent from the major studios to make their films.

Even if most of us have never heard of them, independent film awards have appeared. One well known award is the Independent Spirit Award that was created in the eighties and has been growing since then.

Nowadays, you can easily watch movies online legally on various sites. It is interesting to see that most free movies available to watch on those sites actually are independent films made with low budgets. So just find a site and catch up on independent films. You will certainly find some very good ones that will capture your interest.
