I have one main rule when presented with a multi level marketing or network marketing opportunity. If I feel pressured to make a decision that second and threatened with “this opportunity will disappear if you don’t take advantage of it now” I run away. And so should you.
While there may be some genuine ground floor opportunities out there that I’ve missed out on – I’m pretty sure there a hundreds more that haven’t missed me at all
If the person speaking with you about their multi level marketing or network marketing opportunity truly wants you on their team, they should take the time to answer all your questions and let you come to a reasoned decision. They should save the high pressured sales pitch for selling used cars.
Joining a multi level marketing or network marketing company is a big decision. It sounds so easy in the beginning. The products seem fantastic and easy to sell. You just know that soon you’ll be running with the big dogs and earning tens of thousands of dollars a month.
But what happens if that beautiful picture doesn’t come true? Has your recruiter stuck around to help you build your business or has he run on to the next name on the list?
When considering a multi level marketing or network marketing opportunity you should keep the following in mind.
Multi level marketing checklist.
1. Research the company. Is it a member of the Direct Sales Association? Has it been in business for at least 5 years? Do a Google search for “company name + scam” and see what comes up.
2. Ask the person presenting the opportunity what concrete assistance they provide to their team. Do they hold conference calls? Is there an email group for Q&A? Will they go over any company materials with you so you understand the compensation plan and products? Will you be recruited or sponsored?
3. Is the money in selling products or in adding members to your team? The Federal Trade Commission cautions “Be cautious of plans that claim you will make money through continued growth of your “downline” – the commissions on sales made by new distributors you recruit – rather than through sales of products you make yourself.”
4. Are you selling snake oil? Be very caution of multi level marketing plans that claim to sell miracle products or promise enormous earnings. Exaggeration is incredibly prevalent. Ask for hard evidence of income claims like paycheck stubs etc.
5. Don’t pay or sign any contracts in an “opportunity meeting” or any other high-pressure situation. Insist on taking your time to think over a decision to join. Talk it over with your spouse, a knowledgeable friend, an accountant or lawyer.
6. Ask how much involvement your upline will have in your business? Do they offer training and assistance?
7. When considering a multi level marketing or network marketing opportunity, you should investigate:
* initial start up costs
* monthly fees (if any)
* inventory requirements
* incentives for team building and minimums for overrides (the money you make off your team)
* the nuts and bolts of product order – will you get a company website? How do you process orders? Who does the credit card processing and who pays the fees?
* who pays state sales tax?
Remember, a good opportunity will stand up to the light of day. Scrutinize it carefully and cautiously. Run away from anyone who says “you must join today!”.
And remember, in the end, it’s not about the product – it’s about the people.
